You can sleep, swim or shower in it! ABOUTThe CORNICELLO – Italian for "little horn" or "hornlet" is also called the Corno Portafortuna or "The Lucky Horn", or simply "The Italian Horn". This powerful symbol is from Italian Folk magic traditions that have been employed by humans for hundreds of years to promote health, fertility and virility, and to protect the generative forces of the wearer. Cornicelli are thought to be modeled after an eland horn, to represent fertility, virility, and strength. The shape and color of the red cornicelli are reminiscent of a chili pepper. The cornicello also protects against the evil eye, which is believed to harm nursing mothers and their babies, bearing fruit trees, milking animals, and the sperm of men – any of the the forces of generation. In addition to being worn as jewelry, cornicelli are sometimes hung from the rearview mirrors of cars (based on the older custom of using them to protect draft horses), and in houses. The cornicello is also linked to Greek and Roman mythology. The cornucopia became a symbol of fertility and the earth after Zeus broke a horn from a goat. He filled it with fruit and flowers and gave it to his caretaker. The coral of which it is often made is sacred to Venus, goddess of love, fertility, sex, and prosperity. Silver, of which it is also often made, is sacred to Luna, goddess of the moon. The phallic shape and red color is also a reference to Priapus, a male fertility god. A regionally popular amulet, Red or Silver Horns are most often worn in Southern Italy, and especially in the region of Campania, as well as Lazio, Apulia, Basilicata, Sicily and Calabria. It is also seen as a popular charm among descendants of Italian immigrants in many other countries around the world. Some scholars believe that the Cornicello may have originated as a symbol in a pre-Christian religion, such as the cult of the goddess Fortuna. According to this theory, the horn-shaped amulet was used to invoke the goddess's favor and bring good luck to the wearer. Red is a lucky color in Italy, dating at least as far back as 31 B.C., in the time of Emperor Octavian Augustus when, on the occasion of the Roman New Year, both men and women wore red, as a symbol of prosperity.
